Transforming networks through GMPLS
This talk is about the achievements and ongoing evolution of Nokia’s GMPLS control plane. GMPLS CP is a key asset in Nokia’s 1830PSS portfolio. The talk will focus on
- Key past decisions (multi-layer networking) that are now resulting in significant customer traction and how this can help other customers
- How GMPLS CP is evolving around those key decisions (transition from multi-layer to elastic photonic networking)
- How we further enhance our GMPLS CP capabilities to improve resilience, automation and optimization

Greening optical networks: WaveSuite’s strategy for sustainable growth
As digitalization accelerates, reducing carbon emissions in optical networks has become a top priority for operators facing rising energy costs, regulatory demands, and sustainability commitments. This deep dive explores why action is essential now and how WaveSuite empowers operators to measure, analyze, and optimize energy efficiency; cutting emissions, lowering costs, and enabling truly sustainable networks.
Coordinating complexity: A unified approach to multi-network management
Connecting consumers and enterprises to the Cloud may not be a simple task. In many cases, Data Centers which host the various applications are installed in different regions, reachable through multiple networks, and even, from different vendors. NOC engineers face a significant challenge known as the 'swivel chair' phenomenon, where they must constantly monitor, address, and alert on network issues as they arise across multiple applications and screens. As a result, scaling the transport network requires increased resources to maintain productivity and support all aspects of network management. But it doesn’t have to be that way. By unifying network management into a single-pane view using WaveSuite Network Director, Network Operators can reduce costs by reducing operational tasks, and increase revenues by delivering a better user experience across all vendor networks, regardless of geographic location.

Networking evening event
Unlike many other palaces in the Austrian capital Palais Ferstel is not named after its owner, with that honour going instead to its architect. But not until it was completely renovated in 1982. Otherwise it would have ended up being known as the national bank or the stock exchange building, in recognition of the roles originally intended for this opulent structure built by Heinrich von Ferstel. Be that as it may, Palais Ferstel continues to cast its magic on guests with its fantastic Venetian-cum-Florentine-cum-Trecento architecture, something you won’t find anywhere else in the capital. With stunning rooms, dazzling chandeliers and an impressive colonnaded courtyard. An Italian Palazzo – in the heart of Vienna’s historic first district, on Freyung. With a sunlit, wet-weather-proofed courtyard this transformative space has been perfectly reinvented to host the Wavelengths 2025 evening event. Join us for an evening that promises to be full of camaraderie, laughter, and memorable moments.
Beyond human limits: How AI is reshaping networks
AI will transform how you execute daily optical networking operations, but it can also complement existing automation to improve efficiency and predict events within the network to rapidly resolve issues. Building closed-loop automation and migrating to autonomous networks that can sense, think, and act will reshape how we manage transport networks, and AI will deliver some of the building block to make this possible. This talk explores AI’s role in autonomous networks, and how Nokia intends to implement it into our automation solutions. We’ll explore some of the AI use cases in the context of the autonomous network and go over Nokia’s roadmap to make autonomous networks a reality.
Pluggable evolution to satisfy the AI traffic thirst for DCI bandwidth
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads is driving an unprecedented demand for high-speed datacenter interconnects, as massive amounts of data must be transferred between servers, storage, and accelerators to facilitate complex computations
Next generation pluggable small-form factor modules are foreseen to be the key components to enable this high data-rate transport. However, each application space demands for highly optimized solutions to achieves lowest power consumption and cost per bit data transport. This includes solutions for shorter data center interconnects up to 20km with co-packed optics or linear (retimed) optics but also optimized coherent solutions like “1.6T Coherent Lite”. For longer distances up to 120km the coherent 1.6T-ZR and ZR+ modules will be the dominating solutions.
This technical deep dive demonstrates for each of these application spaces how Nokia can offer highly optimized solutions leveraging Nokia’s next generation leading edge electrical and optical components. By highlight technological challenges and how to overcome them we demonstrate Nokia’s unique position in the industry as a fully vertically integrated company from developing key components to mastering small form factor module integration.
AI-driven work loads: Is your optical network ready for the future?
Large language models (LLMs) used for artificial intelligence are reshaping the datacenter fabric and interconnect landscape by using GPU compute resources with the speed and capacity to run the LLMs effectively. These GPUs may span multiple locations and optical transport is ideal for interconnecting them. This talk explores how constraints imposed by AI affect choosing optical interconnect technology to enable data flows between multiple locations during training or inferencing cycles. Then we progress to explain how Nokia’s optical portfolio meets the reliability, security, and latency interconnect constraints to optimally scale in an energy-efficient way.
Fuel operations with integrated test instruments
Automated service activation tests are an important component of optical network service activation. It helps to speed-up capacity/service provisioning in the network, making the test phase automatic and saving operational costs by avoiding the need for additional instruments or on-site presence. This technical deep dive explores how to use 1830 PSS embedded functions for service test and how to automate such testing in WaveSuite platform to streamline service deployment.
