Gaming licensing program
The gaming industry is built on
our essential technology
Nokia is a pioneer in the gaming industry, with a long and respected legacy for developing multimedia and gaming technologies. Many of our innovations are essential in the modern gaming experience, including fundamental technologies for video compression needed in game development, content delivery and consumption.
For over 30 years Nokia has invested heavily in multimedia R&D. In addition to our significant contributions to the standardization of market-adopted video and audio codecs, we have developed a wide variety of other technologies that are implemented into over a billion new devices every year.
We created our proprietary Mobile Video Codec (MVC) in the 1990s. MVC would later be used as the starting point for the industry-wide video-compression standard H.264/AVC, as well as its successors H.265/HEVC and H.266/VVC.
A patent portfolio the gaming industry depends on
But video compression is just one element of our technology relevant to the gaming industry. Nokia’s patent portfolio contains over 5,000 multimedia inventions for technologies that are used in games.
We have strong patent coverage in every aspect of gaming industry technology, including patents that are essential for game development, cloud processing and the user experience. Nokia also holds key patents for recommending games to users and enabling spatial audio in games.
Looking to the future, we are continuing to develop areas such as AR/VR, Low-Latency Technologies (L4S), and other innovations that take gaming into the metaverse.
