What is AI-RAN?
AI-RAN is the fusion of innovation in AI and Radio Access Networks (RAN) to the mutual benefit of both.
AI helps enhance the efficiency of mobile networks and mobile networks have the potential to elevate consumer and enterprise applications that use AI to the next level.
Radio access networks, which feature an increasing amount of geographically highly distributed computing capabilities in proximity to human users and robotic systems, will benefit from AI and vice versa.
There is a wide industry alignment, also supported by the AI-RAN Alliance, on structuring the extensive field of AI-RAN into three areas:
- AI enhances RAN performance and the operational and resource efficiency of RAN.
- Related AI workloads can run within base stations and data centers.
- RAN enhances AI application performance and capabilities.
- RAN can provide optimized connectivity, data exposure and programmability for AI applications.
- AI and RAN leverage computing synergies to reduce overall TCO.
- AI and RAN extend Cloud RAN to multi-purpose AI-accelerated computing.
AI-RAN will unlock monetization and efficiency opportunities
AI-RAN fuses the massive innovation speed of AI with the RAN innovations enabled by Advanced 5G and 6G.
The significant leaps in AI models and computing have led to the tremendous growth of AI in many domains. In parallel, RAN developments have led to multifold processing power with 5G and a massive increase in both processed data volumes and the number of parameters available for RAN optimization.
We are collaborating with mobile network operators and the larger AI and telecom ecosystems to drive the development of all three dimensions of AI-RAN. This industry collaboration will enable our customers to deliver superior end-user experiences and optimize their TCO.
