Antero Taivalsaari

Biography

Antero Taivalsaari is a Bell Labs Fellow at Nokia, and the last remaining formally nominated Nokia Fellow from the "device Nokia" era.

Antero is best known for his work on the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) at Sun Microsystems in California in the early 2000s. The J2ME platform launched the application revolution on mobile phones.  Antero wrote the original J2ME virtual machine that ultimately ran in over one billion mobile devices.  He also managed the original engineering team that took J2ME to the market, as well as led international standardization efforts that defined the core Java APIs for mobile devices.

Over the years, Antero has worked on nearly all aspects of modern software development, ranging from embedded software to PC, mobile and web (frontend) development, and more recently cloud backend software and IoT systems.

Antero has been working on web, cloud and IoT related topics since 2006, e.g., pioneering interactive web programming environments at Sun Labs, creating a purely web-based mobile platform (Nokia Cloudberry), constructing the first Industrial IoT / Programmable World end-to-end systems at Nokia Technologies, as well as driving and actively participating in Digital Health and Cellular IoT system incubation at Nokia.

Antero's current technical interests include the Programmable World & software development for the Internet of Things, Cellular IoT technologies, edge computing, web & cloud backend software, virtualization technologies, virtual machines, and the concept of Liquid (multi-device) Software.

Most recently, Antero has been involved in the incubation of Remote Environmental Monitoring technologies at Bell Labs together with a passionate team of researchers and engineers focusing on environmental sustainability.

Antero has a strong academic background as well, with Google Scholar publication H-index of 26. He has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles in major conferences and journals, co-authored three books, and been a frequent reviewer in major international conferences and journals.  He has held an honorary adjunct professorship (docenture) at Tampere University (formerly Tampere University of Technology) since 2002.
