Assumptions
The Nokia LAN Savings Calculator tool calculates the total savings percentage of a passive optical LAN solution relative to a traditional copper-based LAN based on the parameters entered: number of floors, end points and horizontal drop length (m). The savings are represented as
- Total Savings
- Capital Expenditure (CAPEX)
- Operational Expenditure (OPEX)
The CAPEX consists of networking equipment and cabling and their representation is relative to the CAPEX.
The OPEX consists of energy, floor space and maintenance and their representation is relative to the OPEX.
This tool is based on an economical model of an enterprise building by Nokia Bell Labs and contains a number of assumptions. The assumptions may not reflect the circumstances of your business, and information used in the assumptions is subject to change.
Period
The savings will be simulated for 2 options: First Year and cumulative after 5 years.
Configuration
The Optical LAN configuration includes a central Optical Line Terminal (OLT) located in a main IT room, and a passive splitter on each floor to provide aggregation of multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) connected with fiber. The OLT consists of 4 slots and each slot can be equipped with a 16 PON port Line Terminal (LT) and as such the OLT can support up to 8,192 endpoints.
The traditional copper-based LAN architecture in this model is based on the assumption that each floor requires a 24p workgroup switch to aggregate multiple GigE endpoints over Cat 6 cabling and a 24p core switch located in the main IT room to aggregate traffic from multiple workgroup switches.
For the horizontal drop cable, Single Mode Fiber is considered for Passive Optical LAN and CAT6 cabling for traditional copper-based LAN.
For both network options, it is assumed that traffic is handed off from the main IT room to a wide area network (WAN) for connectivity outside the enterprise.
